The American Dental Association suggests visiting your dentist every six months, and children should start seeing one when their first teeth appear or by no later than their first birthdays. Truckee Pediatric Dentistry offers comprehensive dental exams and cleanings, essential to helping your children start good oral hygiene habits early and preventative care to maintain healthy teeth and gums until adulthood.
First Steps for Healthy Teeth
Dr. Gustafsson and the Truckee Pediatric Dentistry team stress the importance of periodic dental exams and cleanings. As companions to your children’s home routines of brushing and flossing, these exams and cleanings are a vital component of their overall oral hygiene regimens and provide several key benefits:
- Avert tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath
- Advanced detection of tooth and gum issues
- Early treatment to avoid extensive dental procedures
- Prevent teeth staining for a whiter smile
- A lifetime of healthy teeth and gums
What to Expect at an Exam
At your child’s dental exam, Dr. Gustafsson will examine his or her teeth and gums to look for symptoms of tooth decay, gum problems or other conditions. He may also perform traditional or digital X-rays to check for deeper issues with your child’s gums and teeth.
During your child’s teeth cleaning, one of our hygienists will examine his or her teeth and filings for cavities or other problems. Next, the hygienist will perform a periodontal exam to check your child’s gums. This is followed by a cleaning to eliminate any tartar buildup, after which the hygienist will floss your child’s teeth and apply both a polishing compound and fluoride.
