While we offer a number of restorative treatments like dental fillings or laser dentistry, at our practice, we strive to focus on preventive care – and one of the most effective preventive treatments available is dental sealants. Many patients and parents aren't familiar with dental sealants or why they're beneficial, so for this blog, we wanted to explain what makes dental sealants such an effective preventive measure for so many children.
What Are Dental Sealants?
Essentially, dental sealants are a lot like what they sound like: a thin, protective coating of plastic or resin that's applied to the teeth to "seal" them off, protecting them from corrosive bacteria and acids. The sealants act as a shield for the teeth, helping to prevent cavities by keeping cavity-causing substances off the surface of the enamel. Dental sealants are a simple, effective way to prevent cavities from forming in children and teenagers.
Should My Child Get Dental Sealants?
The reason dental sealants have become popular is that in most children who develop a cavity, the cavity forms in the chewing surfaces of the rear molars. That's because these teeth have countless nooks and crannies that are virtually impossible to keep clean through brushing – providing the perfect place for food particles, plaque, and bacteria to hide. Over time, these accumulations create acids that eat into the tooth enamel, causing a cavity.
While sealants are not mandatory and may not be right for everyone, we recommend that most parents strongly consider having their children get sealants. It's a simple procedure that's effective at preventing cavities, helping to preserve the health of the mouth and encourage healthy dental development.
The Dental Sealants Procedure
Thankfully, the procedure for dental sealants is a simple, routine, and convenient one. If and your child decide to get sealants, we'll bring them in for an appointment and perform a thorough cleaning of the rear molars. After removing any plaque, bacteria, and tartar, we'll then sterilize the area using antibiotics. Once completely sterilized, Dr. Gustaffson will apply a dental resin to the teeth, then cure the resin using a special light. Once the resin is cured and fully dried, your child is free to go – and their teeth will be protected from cavities for years to come!
